Juvenile Jack Dempsey Cichlid Fish
Jack Dempsey Juveniles 3 to 5 Months Old
These Jack Dempsey cichlids range in age from 3 months to 5 months. There are about 40 of them in this 55 gallon aquarium. Crowded, yes but with large water changes daily, filter cleaning and proper feeding, they do just fine.
The bottom of the tank is siphoned daily and the filters are cleaned every other day. The 55 tank is one of 5 aquariums all connected to a central filtration system. There is a bio-tower suspended over the sump filter that has 300 gph pumped through it. I don’t use carbon in this system because with the constant daily water changes of 20% to 25%, carbon is a waste of money.
Most all of these Jack Dempsey cichlids found their way into pet stores and are now being enjoyed by enthusiasts all over the area.
At this point I had approximately 300 Jack Dempsey cichlids under my care with more arriving all the time.
This is a very crowded tank but with the large water changes daily and filters cleaned 3 or 4 times a week, they are doing just fine. This aquarium is 1 of 5 in a closed system with a central filter. Cleaning is very easy as there is no gravel on the tank floors and the large filter pads slip right out replaced with clean pads taking about 2 minutes time. The dirty pads are then cleaned under the water spray and soaked for a day before being used again.
Feeding is a variety of home made foods, high quality cichlid feed, spurilina algae, adult live brine shrimp and earth worms for the larger juveniles.

Hey i just bought a little jack dempsey from the local pet store. He is about a 1.5 inches long. I was curious to to know how long until he/she gets larger, adult size. Also he does have red on his dorsal fin along the top is it a good indicator he will be male?
