GREAT LIP LOCK PICTURES
Jack Dempsey Breeding Pair
This is what a pair of Jack Dempsey cichlids look like when they are breeding. They tend to look like they are fighting at first and do the lip locking that you see. Eventually the female were drop her eggs when she OK’s her mate. Then the male should fertilize them directly afterward. Not always the case though.

How did their colors get to be so beautiful?! i currently have a 2 inch Jack Dempsey, and i feed him hikari spirulina brine shrimp (freeze-dried). I wanted to know what else i could do to ensure that he grows up looking like these two!

I think that is a bit much for a 55gal tank, since they all have a heavy bio-load (waste) i would recommend upgrading to something a bit larger to avoid problems down the road.

Oh yes indeed… as they grow, you will have many confrentations Azim. Two of each may work.

jackarthur46 i know that the bigger is the male but why does one have blue spots on its face and the other not, is it a way to sex them.
if it is then i have a female. which is what i think mine is.

that is a little to much to have in a tank together. Just having two oscars in a tank together is bad. they are really mean and they will kill each other if they do not get feed enough. you need to make sure they also have enough room to move and grow. think it is 5 inches to a fish in a tank.

wrong Zach Oscars are generally mellow, the only thing that will make two Oscars fight is to small of a tank.

I would imagine that in a 55 you should keep only a pair or just 1 of each or you most likly will wind up with 3 dead fish and only 1 survivor. Thats only my opinion.

i have a 55 with 2 oscars and 2 JD for oh probably 2 years now i have really beefed up my filtration up alot in my opinion that is the most important part a clean tank is a happy tank JD i noticed dont take as much room as the oscars do but will surely fight for there share if they dont feel they are getting enough i had also raised them all from about 2 inches so that probably makes a difference in them all getting along just fine i hear alot of people telling me thats too many there too big for that and all these other things but they are all nice bright colors and healthy as the day i put em in there so i am always telling people to back off one if the biggest things i hear is “they have more room than that in the wild” i kinda laugh at this considering these fish have really never been in the wild they have been bred in captivity for god knows how many generations and i bet my tank is sure alot more confortable then being crammed in the quarters they are in at the fish farms, anyway the biggest threat to fish is not the amount of room they have rather have well your keeping there home/water clean they may get into fights every now and then but it also depends on the personality of the fish i know a guy who has his oscar in with his community tank the oscar wont even attack goldfish and is very picky about his pellets and i know some people who have rainbows that are just downright mean and can even live with africans the only way to really truly tell if your fish are going to get along is to try and if you notice them getting whooped make some changes

James, It’s more important to know the age of your Jacks. I’ve had Jacks grow to 3 inches long before they reached breeding age. Usually, JDs that reach 3 inches are able to breed but if they’re less then 6 months old, it’s not likely they will. Good luck.
