hey jack,
i watched a couple of your videos and saw that the male is a lighter color than the female. is that always the case because one of my jack dempseys is larger and has a darker color than the other?

please reply

We got 4 half inch Jack Dempsey fry from the local fish store. After a week they've doubled in size. Already they've paired up - two pairs that hang out together all the time. I think I can tell the males from the females, because of the pairs there are one in each that is larger and has more contrast to the colors.

I was just going to grow them up to 2" and sell them but they're pretty cool. I need to start looking at bigger tanks. They're in a 10-gal but are growing so fast!

I'm glad you enjoy the web site and the vids. The size tank the mating pair is in is a 29 gallon. It's a bit on the small size but they seem to do fine when it's just the two of them in there. Keep up those great comments and suggestions. I'm sure the readers are taking not of your experience.

Very nice site I am envious of your basement I am only a kid so my parents won't allow me to have any more tanks. I have a small 3.5 inch male Dempsey and I love him. I believe another way to sex dempsies is by the shape of their bodies. Females tend to be rounder. Lao males have a red or white tipped fin. They are also more colourful and agressive. You should feed your dempsies some feeder fish breed some to make sure they are in clean water it's fun to watch. Dempsy eat live food he seems to have a very fast metabolism because his stomach caves in by the morning no matter how much I feed him. what size is the tank you keep your mating pair in. ( love the vid seen I alot on YouTube before this)

It's very difficult to sex Jack Dempsey cichlids, especially as young juveniles. When fully mature the males are usually much larger with elongated fins. But most hobbyist want to know the sex way before they grow to full maturity and the only way to truly tell is to watch these fish interact together. Even at a young age, males will select females and they will bond.
